HIEA 140. China in the Contemporary World

How much control do individuals living within nations have over their own lives? How much control do independent countries such as China have over global processes? China in the Contemporary World examines these questions through China’s attempts to limit and encourage the movement of people, ideas, and things across its borders since 1976.

Graduate Students

Along with Professor Micah Muscolino, Karl Gerth co-supervises all graduate students in UC San Diego’s top-ranked and internationally-renowned program in modern Chinese history. The program combines structured graduate research seminars and ample opportunities to develop individual interests with faculty members across the university. In addition, with East China Normal University (Shanghai), the program co-sponsors a yearly joint graduate student conference (see photo above). Graduates of the program teach at top universities and colleges across the United States and Canada.
